Strawberry care video after fruiting - whisker removal

Video of strawberry care after harvest. Many gardeners visit a strawberry garden only when they can pick a berry on it, and then forget about bushes, but caring for strawberries after fruiting is also very important.

Whiskers take nutrients from the bush and thus reduce yields, so they need to be removed. This should be done with pruning shears, and not torn off by hand, otherwise they will break and begin to hurt. Some mustaches of successful varieties can be rooted: put a small pot of soil next to the bush and plant a young plant in it without breaking the mustache. When the root system is formed, we separate the young plant from the mother plant, and bury it in the soil together with the pot for the winter. Next year you will have quality planting material.

Strawberry leaves also require care. Some gardeners cut them off immediately after the berry season, but this cannot be done - the fruit buds of the future harvest are laid in them. Remove only yellow and diseased leaves. If you follow these simple rules, then you will be provided with a rich strawberry harvest.

But strawberry pruning still needs to be done. How to do it correctly? Look.

Strawberries love care and not only the amount of the harvest depends on its quality, but also the taste of the berries. During the budding period, the plant especially needs feeding, watering, protection from pests and diseases. Early strawberry varieties bloom in May. Medium and late varieties bloom in early June. During this period, the gardener is expected to perform the following strawberry care activities, namely:

Loosening... Strawberries bloom and bear fruit well if their roots receive enough oxygen and heat from the sun. Regular loosening of the soil helps to remove weeds from the garden in a timely manner and prevents the formation of a dense crust around the bushes. After watering, the soil is loosened the next day. The roots receive more nutrients and moisture through well-loosened soil.

Feeding strawberries during flowering and fruiting

Throughout the season, strawberries need to be fed 3 times - at the beginning of the growing season, during flowering and at the end of fruiting. At the beginning of summer, strawberries form fruits and liquid organic fertilizers (this can be chicken droppings, yeast solution or herbal tincture) are suitable as top dressing.

The most necessary substance at this stage, when berries are formed, is potassium. He is responsible for the development of fruits, their beautiful appearance and taste.

Therefore, top dressing must necessarily contain it - you can fertilize the plants with wood ash by scattering one handful under a bush.

Or you can make an ash infusion - for this, dilute a glass of ash in 10 liters of water, insist for 24 hours. Then water the plants under the root, adding about 1 liter of infusion under the bush.

Attention: in the summer, it is necessary to make any liquid top dressing either after rain, or after watering, in no case on dry land.

Also, during flowering, you can make foliar dressing with boric acid, such a microfertilizer increases the yield, flowering intensity, improves the nutrition of the ovaries and increases the flow of sugar to the fruits. To do this, dilute 10 g of boric acid in 10 liters of water.

I first pour the powder into a liter jar and pour hot water into it, stirring continuously until it dissolves completely. Then I bring the solution to the required volume - 10 liters.

Spraying must be done with a freshly prepared solution in the morning or in the evening, it is also possible in cloudy, not rainy weather. The consumption of the working solution is 1 liter per 10 m2.

Correct pruning

Pruning is done in late August or early September. Remove any dry and damaged leaves before pruning. When to cut the leaves is also an important question. If your plant "lives" for the second year already, then foliage pruning is required. Saplings of the first year go before winter not cut.

Pruning is carried out so that it remains part of a bush 5-6 cm high. Take a sharp pruner and cut it off!

Some gardeners mow the entire victoria plantation. Do I need to mow! Of course not! You can mow the seedlings of the first year, and this is completely unacceptable.

When to cut off the scions? At the end of August, you need to start trimming the mustache, if this is not done, then they will greatly weaken the strawberry bush. Leave the strongest branches. Do not leave a lot, otherwise they will draw all the strength from the mother seedling.

Do I need to root the mustache? Cut off the shoots with pruning shears as low as possible to the ground.

How to water strawberries at the end of the growing season? During this period, proper watering is very important. Often it is not worth watering, once every 14 days is enough, but abundant!

Fertilizing garden strawberries with mineral fertilizers

Supporters of mineral fertilizers know that in order to regrow the leaf mass after pruning, it is necessary to feed the strawberries with nitrogen. But the main thing here is not to overdo it.

Excessive application of nitrogenous fertilizers after fruiting can lead to the development of powerful leaves, increased whisker growth, and the laying of flower buds will not occur or will be defective.

Ammonium nitrate

Dilute the solution at the rate of 10 grams of nitrate per 10 liters of water and water the plants without getting on the strawberry leaves to prevent burns.

Special mineral fertilizers

For the successful formation of flower buds of the next season, garden strawberries must be fed with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. The modern market offers many special mineral fertilizers for garden strawberries. The same fertilizers, if applied in autumn, make it possible to better prepare the plant for wintering.

  • "Fertika autumn" - complex mineral fertilizer with a high content of phosphorus and potassium.
  • "Novofert" - universal complex fertilizer, which is also well suited for strawberries.
  • "Potassium humate" - used for garden strawberries, as a rule, twice: after fruiting and in mid-September. Fertilizer has a positive effect on the development of the root system, the setting of flower buds and the restoration of berry bushes.

Top dressing

During flowering and fruiting, it is not recommended to apply nitrogen-containing fertilizers. They promote the formation of new foliage. And this is not very good for ripening berries. But after the completion of fruiting, everything changes dramatically, and fertilizers containing nitrogen are especially necessary for strawberries.

  • After pruning, strawberry bushes should be fed with fertilizers, which will contain a full set of essential nutrients. For 1 sq. m. 30 grams of mineral fertilizers are considered sufficient.
  • Ammophoska is considered the best top dressing for these purposes. In addition to the basic minerals nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, it includes compounds of calcium, magnesium and sulfur.
  • Chlorine is harmful to strawberries. Therefore, fertilizers containing this element should be completely eliminated.
  • From organic fertilizers for strawberries, humus has proven itself well. In addition to useful elements for the development of bushes, it also improves the quality of the soil in which strawberries grow.
  • To avoid premature evaporation of moisture after watering, and the upper part of the soil has not turned into a crust, it should be covered with peat.

Caring for strawberries, when the fruiting period ends, is the most responsible and, in principle, not surprising, because if everything is not done on time, then as a result next year there will be a bad harvest. By the way, I would recommend doing top dressing as high quality as possible, especially if you have problems with the land. Pruning is not too strong, it is better not to rush and if something happens, finish it in the spring. And of course, before planting strawberries at all, you should choose exactly those varieties that are ideal for your climatic conditions, this is the only way to get a good harvest every year.

Strawberry leaves live for about 40 days, so sooner or later you will have to remove it anyway. But if the leaves are good healthy, then why not leave. I leave only young leaves in the very heart of the bush, while the leaf should be absolutely healthy without spots, necrosis, etc.

It is better to cut off the entire bush on seasoned strawberries, it is better to cut off young shoots at the end of the season after fruiting, but not completely. Only dry leaves are harvested. I don't cut the mustache on a young strawberry for the first season, I give it the opportunity to grow, then I remove it.

Trim - Do not trim the leaves is a long-standing controversy. There are thousands for and thousands against. If you haven't cut it yet, then it's not worth it, it's already too late, the bushes will not have time to grow the green mass. All trimming should be done immediately after harvest. The main ZA is the removal of old diseased leaves and immediately prophylactic treatment of "naked" bushes and earth with antifungal drugs (phytosporin, Bordeaux). I prune, feed, sing, process, cover in the cold with spruce branches and always with a full basket. In general, the whole berry is prepared for winter immediately after harvest.

If garden strawberries (strawberries) are severely affected by all kinds of diseases, I must remove the leaves, leaving the growing point, and treat them against diseases and pests. This should be done as early as possible (usually immediately after picking the berries) so that new leaves can grow, and the plants themselves get stronger and can prepare for winter. After removing the leaves, I regularly water and feed the strawberries - this contributes to the formation of powerful bushes and abundant flowering next year.
